Pet Custody Survey

A new survey by Compare the Market reveals that 87% of couples have not discussed who would keep a pet if their relationship ended. 57% say they would choose their pet over their partner in a hypothetical scenario. Other findings:

- 31% of former couples have argued about who should keep their pet. 53% of those respondents described the disagreement as more challenging than arguments over finances.

- 21% of people say giving up their pet would be harder than losing their home.

- Just 13% of separated couples discussed pet arrangements before taking on a pet. 31% would consider making an informal agreement in advance.

- 29% of couples have clashed over pet costs.

- 47% of people believe they should keep a pet after a separation, compared with 13% who say custody should go to the person who spends the most time caring for it.

- 60% of people have stayed in contact with an ex-partner solely because of their pet.

- 45% of people monitor an ex’s social media for pet photos and updates.

- 25% of people would consider getting back together with an ex because of a shared pet.
