Caitlyn Smith Started A Band At 12-Years-Old & Cold Called Venues To Play

Well-known songwriter and artist Caitlyn Smith stopped by The Bobby Bones Show to talk about her album Supernova and perform a beautiful cover of Coldplay's "Fix You."

On March 13th, Smith dropped her album Supernova, but because of the pandemic she didn't get to celebrate the album as most artists typically would. She said it was a sad and hard time for her, but she was hardly even thinking about her album at the time. On her new album, she released the song "I Can't," but then re-recorded it as a collaboration with Old Dominion months later.

Smith has written several songs in the music community. She wrote "Like I'm Gonna Lose You" with Meghan Trainor and another songwriter a few years before the song was ever released and recorded. The song idea came from Trainer who came into the write after she had a bad dream that she lost her brother. And the other songwriter shared he had the song title "Like I'm Gonna Lose You" in his head. So with the two ideas, the song was born. At the time of the write, Smith had no idea John Legend would end up on it and "didn't even know [John Legend recording one of her songs] was in the realm of possibilities." Smith also has two songwriting cuts with Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, respectively. Smith wrote "Tacoma" and knew the song was perfect for her, but then she got a text from Brooks who really loved the song and wanted to record it. Brooks is one of her heroes, so she of course said yes to him recording it. She also wrote "Every Girl In This Town," one of Yearwood's recent songs. That song being recorded by Yearwood was a full circle moment for Smith, she shared that her first ever concert was Yearwood's at 7-years-old.

Always wanting to be in the music industry, Smith started a band when she was just 12-years-old. She was the lead singer and wrote all of the songs for the band. She recruited her brother to play the drums, and her two best friends to play other instruments. At her young age, she would cold call venues and ask them to hire her band. They did get some gigs, but they were usually just field parties.
