As the winter storm approaches, officials across the region are asking residents to be smart when using alternative heating methods in the event of power outages. Generators are often used during power outages, which can be deadly if not used properly. Always have carbon monoxide detectors present when using a generator, keep generators outdoors and at least 20 feet from structures, and never leave them running while sleeping. Closing off unused rooms and using towels to block drafts can help keep heat inside. Residents are also encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbors during extreme cold and snow.
