Today is National Popcorn Day!

The anxious sound it makes as each kernel jumps around the microwave, the buttery smell that makes its way around the house and the first crunch you take of the tiny puff makes you want to just pop open another bag! Popcorn is America’s number one movie night companion - that must be a fact since about six billion quarts are consumed each year.

Popcorn played a key role in saving movie theaters during the depression. While movie theaters began to shut down, some owners figured a snack bar would raise more profit, and popcorn was their largest profit margin, a manager at Film Forum told CBS News. Popcorn is one of the country’s oldest snacks and it looks like it’s not poppin’ anywhere far while movies keep on filming.
